WEEK 05. 07-08-12.
PROGRESS:
floor to existing house removed.
TO DISCUSS:
There seems to be a fairly decent (although old) foundation in place to the 4 walls.
This is great as will save more than a few quid!!!!
Engineer had a look and feels that the foundation combined with the good quality soil underneath will be sufficient to hold firm - its done so for 200 years and the loading to be applied will not be significantly more than to date. (the house was more than likely 2 storey at some point).
This means no underpinning and no new foundation to cast.
Contractor will determine how much of a saving this will be!!!
There will, however, be a need to put in a Damp Proof Course (dpc) somewhere - the absence of a new foundation will mean damp can penetrate upwards - we had hoped that the foundation could act to stop damp penetration. If we make do without this foundation we will need a seperate Damp Proof Course - in older buildings it can be chemically injected into the wall at about 300m above ground.
I will however get a quotation from the builder for this before proceeding - we can discuss the need for it at that time.
